Fifteen years after the end of the brutal Balkan conflict, world attention once again focused on the region.

In the midst of a wave of refugees fleeing war and instability in the Middle East, a new route emerged to the stable countries of Western Europe.

The Balkans had become a path to a better life.

In 2015, over a million refugees chose the so-called “Balkan Route” for their journey to safety.

They travelled through Turkey into Europe, progressing through
Greece,
Macedonia,
Serbia,
Croatia,
Hungary,
and Slovenia.

The route was blocked in March 2016, as countries across Europe imposed strict border controls.

At the end of that month, Turkey agreed to restrict to the flow of refugees across its borders, officially closing the route, although some still slip through.
While the issue has largely faded from the public agenda, tens of thousands of refugees are still scattered across the Balkans. This site tells the story of the individuals that remain.
